Eight of Wands
This optimistic card indicates undoubted progress towards a goal.
This optimistic card indicates undoubted progress towards a goal.
Circumstances are such that expected events begin to unfold uncontrollably, everything has come into motion, opposition no longer exists, and something will happen soon. Usually, this card heralds events favorable to the querent (but in case it is surrounded by negative Arcana, it accelerates the dynamics of unpleasant events). This is – almost the only one of all 78 cards – clearly indicating that events will occur in the very near future, faster than one can believe. It shows that something is changing, something is in the air and will arrive sooner than we expect, and that this process has already begun, even if we haven't noticed it yet.
If the question concerns long-term plans, they will be realized and in any case enter a decisive phase. Under the jurisdiction of the Eight of Wands – unexpected events, 'non-accidental accidents.' Surprises of fate (all that is needed and useful will sooner or later fall into one's hands, and here – rather sooner, simply catching one off guard). It is a sign that 'something is on the way' – news that will be received any moment, unexpected solutions to problems, fortunate coincidences. In combination with Major Arcana foretelling changes (e.g., Wheel of Fortune) – amazing and unexpected events are coming, which can sometimes change an entire life in a minute.
If equilibrium in some matter was lost, its restoration is not far off. Generally, it can be said that the keywords of the Eight of Wands are – a second wind! It points to the timely arrival of help, energy, information, inspiration – and a person themselves usually perfectly understands which area of their life needs this most right now, where that 'field of righteous struggle' is. Usually, the suit of Wands points to the sphere of business and career, but the Eight of Wands has a special relation to personal life and the awakening of love.
The Eight of Wands serves as an indicator of 'everything fast' – races, email, air travel. It is an 'express' card, and love's arrows are also relevant. This is not the case where people look each other over for a long time, sniff around, and get used to each other. Here, before you know it, you find that your head is lost, infatuation is progressing, and events are developing at full speed. The necessity to rapidly and uncompromisingly make some decision, like 'yes or no.'
The motto 'Strike while the iron is hot!' Some authors believe the Eight of Wands is a very 'Scorpio-like' card, so the situations it sets are sharp and uncompromising. However, it should be noted that for few people is the Eight of Wands a 'strong' card, i.e., necessarily manifesting at full power. This is not a fully researched question, and we hope that valuable information with practical observations about the manifestations of this card will appear on the portal. For now, the impression is that it is more noticeable in spreads concerning matters that have somehow stalled at a 'dead point.' If so, then the drawn Eight of Wands is the answer.
Travel. A countryside picnic. Generally, light, pleasant, and very active pastime. Possibly a vacation, a time of freedom.
Receiving an important message. This could be longed-for news or some surprise no one counted on.
Heuristic!
Unexpected ideas, insights, and discoveries, understanding of some interconnections, expansion of consciousness. In psychological terms – the ability to see new gestalts, to see something new in reality, to grasp something, to catch important information (sometimes literally 'lying on the surface' but previously eluding understanding).
Hope, love of life, emotionality, and energy. Inspiration, optimism. The state of a person hurrying and succeeding. They realize that time is not always plentiful; if delayed, it may be too late. Generally, the Eight of Wands is also a card of 'Uranian' personalities, like The Fool, open to the new and ready to accept any surprises of fate. Her Majesty Chance personally watches over them! They walk in the flow; everything truly necessary comes to them by itself (steps on their foot, falls on their head... circumstances may vary, but the essence does not change – miracles occur).
This is a bright card of lightness and freedom, especially from some emotional restrictions – in this sense, the card is opposite to the Eight of Swords. What hindered, created problems, caused pain, is no longer relevant.
All elements have come into motion, 'it's off and running.'
This is the embodiment of the Law of Synchronicity, connectedness, the great audibility in the Universe. A whole stream of news from the subtle world pours upon one's head (hence the card's connection with the sphere of esoteric pursuits). Signs and insights literally shower from higher spheres into three-dimensional reality. This is a card of Uranian perception, spiritual revelations and insights, a bridge between the spiritual and material worlds, the acquisition of new inner horizons (the mind is excited, many ideas come to mind, a spark ignites a flame – including that of love). Miracles, magical coincidences. One can only marvel at how quickly what seemed impossible just yesterday can happen! 'You won't even have time to blink!' says this card.
From a magical point of view, the Eight of Wands is an explosion of life force ('libido'). Mary Greer notes that as a card of swift movement, the Eight of Wands is like a witch's broom, reflecting the ability to 'fly,' astral travel. It remains to add that the image of a broom is directly related to libido – after all, it symbolizes the symbolic union of masculine and feminine principles. Similar ideas exist in the East (e.g., the idea of the properties of Kundalini, which survived as the image of a fire-breathing dragon – a 'fiery serpent' on which 'one can fly'). From an astrological point of view, considering the Eight of Wands is not a simple task.
From the perspective of planets, it is considered that this is a card where the influence of the Law is felt, on the one hand cosmic (Uranus), on the other social (Jupiter), and it is precisely their interaction that gives 'incomprehensible coincidences' in accordance with a person's thoughts and aspirations. However, the question remains open as to how ready the person themselves is to accept the miracle that has occurred in their life (Uranus gives sudden changes and advancements in some area, qualitative leaps, events that require a quick reaction), and it can be said that on a deep level, this is a card testing a person's trust in life (and life's trust in them), a card testing 'political literacy.'
We also found such a postulate: 'The first decan of Sagittarius, ruled by the planet Mercury, expresses the idea of transforming energy into thought. Everything is energy and everything is based on it: the basis of the world's energy processes is the law of unity and struggle of opposites. It also forms the dynamics of thought. And conversely, the activity of our mind is the key to understanding the dynamics of the forces governing the world. Contradictions colliding with each other give impetus to thought and direct it to the higher, just as Sagittarius, drawing the bowstring, sends the arrows of his aspirations to the stars. He is attracted to the spiritual side of life, but he pushes off from the material.'
This decan symbolizes the cognition of nature and human nature as part of it. In its dynamics lies the support of that spiritual movement which the cards of the Air element describe. The first decan of Sagittarius gives a love of classification and the authority of a teacher. But this is only the pure abstraction of thought. Therefore, in life, representatives of this decan often have to face material difficulties and the postponement of their desires – life cannot keep up with the speed of their thought. But the contradictoriness of the world's structure awakens thought in them and educates it, gradually forming it into harmonious concepts.
Light and shadow (advice and warning)
The card says – time to accelerate, act actively, plan and take some steps ('Don't delay!'). The ancient Greeks perfectly distinguished two meanings of the word 'time' – chronos and kairos. Chronos is quantitative time (there can be a lot, a little, it can be measured, etc.). And kairos is qualitative time, the time of Fulfillment. The Eight of Wands says – kairos! The right hour has come, you are on the path to guaranteed success, seize the moment, move towards the goal without wasting time. The desired can only be achieved by quick and decisive actions. Another piece of advice – open your eyes and ears, be extremely receptive. Some key information may come in a very unexpected form; it's important not to miss it. Warning: too rapid advancement forward. Too hastily made decisions – they may still have to be changed. Excessive forcing of events. Details are lost due to the speed of the creative flight. Haste is fraught with shoddy work. Excessive excitement concerning the topic of the question.
A period of swift dynamics, activity, quick actions. Time to reap the fruits of previously started actions, to proceed to the next phase of an enterprise. Sudden advancement forward (what was stuck suddenly went, the matter moved from a 'dead point'), accomplishing the impossible. Realization of hopes, end of opposition and obstacles, achievement is not far off.
Chances for further development (opportunities and signs simply hang in the air). A favorable turn of events, new development in affairs, an unexpected turn for the better, and as a result – a sea of excitement and urgent matters! One has to react quickly and make decisions, call five places at once and generally run, outstripping one's own whistle, to cope with unexpected happiness.
Synchronicity can be expressed in receiving sudden offers, in some significant meetings, 'chance' events, essentially being a response to a person's aspirations and serving as confirmation that their desire is appropriate and they are moving in the right direction.
Under the Eight of Wands, one can get a job offer and land a new place. At the same time, the ability to quickly enter a new circle of people, learn to be one's own there, assimilate unwritten rules that 'hang in the air' will be required. The Eight of Wands precisely describes the ability to 'catch' them (or, in psychological terms, assimilate organizational culture).
The fact that the eight wands on the card are flying very purposefully and orderly leads many authors to think that this card relates to ordering and rationalizing something, creating a system or formula, putting affairs in order at least on a conceptual level (and in combination with the Eight of Pentacles – on a purely practical level, right down to arranging these very affairs on shelves and in folders). Competent formulation of ideas will undoubtedly lead to success.
Also, this card relates to teamwork of cool specialists, where everyone acts as if on their own, but all together very coherently do a common task.
Intense commercial interaction (payments fly back and forth). Influx of information.
Some authors believe that the Eight of Wands symbolizes science, books, learning, education, and generally 'the printed word' (including the internet).
Business related to innovations.
The card is closely related to finances, regarding which success is foreseen, the emergence of new sources of income. Influx of investments. Successful interaction with banks. Obtaining a favorable loan. Urgent money matters. A monetary bonus.
In old dictionaries, the Eight of Wands describes rural life in nature's lap, serves as an indicator of gardens and fields.
"From a spark, a flame will ignite."
In old dictionaries, the Eight of Wands is unambiguous – a card of infatuation! In modern terms – wedding bustle. Or at least an influx of romantic opportunities. 'Love will unexpectedly descend when you least expect it.' And even if you expect it, the feeling is still not excluded that it attacked from around some corner. Under the Eight of Wands often go vivid infatuations giving an adrenaline rush, a kind of unexpected amorous mobilization. Feelings are not deep, but excitement, euphoria, elation, and a tendency to force events are evident. Unrestrained striving towards the object of infatuation, a passionate desire to be together, pressure, swift actions.
If a person is single, then a favorable opportunity for creating a relationship simply hangs in the air, a dream is ready to become reality, to materialize. It happens that a person impatiently awaited this, and yet everything happens like a bolt from the blue, catching them off guard. And if they didn't wait, the card still reports the prospect of falling head over heels in love. Sometimes the Eight of Wands describes truly amazing manifestations of synchronicity, unexpected happy meetings serving as the result of 'accidents' based on nothing accidental. Moreover, in a love spread, this card foretells the querent selfless devotion from the beloved person.
A card of self-disclosure (letters, conversations) regarding people who mean something. Clarification of intentions, overcoming misunderstanding (with favorable cards – even resolution of conflicts between irreconcilable parties). Unexpected revival of a relationship, freshness and sincerity of feelings, change for the better. A romantic invitation (combining both the romantic and 'herald' aspect of this card), or even a marriage proposal (which may sound completely unexpected). Spontaneous decisions like a wedding on a bet – this is also the Eight of Wands. Surrounding cards will show to what extent one should trust these messages and decisions.
The Eight of Wands accentuates three phenomena that are very closely interrelated.
Firstly, it raises the question of hyperactivity, excessive pace, a very dynamic lifestyle. Secondly (and as a consequence) – the question of human biorhythms and their disruption (sleep and wake hours, lack of sleep, etc.), and thirdly – the question of 'stress hormones,' mainly adrenaline, which should provide all this activity. The show must go on. But it's not a fact that the adrenal glands like this.
Perhaps the body is subjected to many risks and threats, but so far successfully resists them thanks to this 'stress mobilization,' copes with them. The key – a proper internal state of consciousness, humility and merging with the flow, adaptation.
In reversed form, these eight wands say 'don't.' Not kairos.
Delay and stagnation. Bureaucracy, postponement of decisions. Serious delays, cancellations (especially concerning flights). Stoppages, strikes. The consequences of the situation may be unpleasant – 'not the moment,' not the time to take action. Energies work against the intended plan; forces will be spent in vain. Lack of synchronization (everything happens 'out of step with time').
Indecisiveness, uncertainty, anxiety, hesitation. Losses due to delay.
The reversed Eight of Wands reminds of a student who missed a deadline and frantically 'slaps together' the work at the last minute: delay turns into mad haste, panic, and pangs of conscience.
Disagreements, internal strife between business partners (or spouses). Criticism, envy, confrontation with lies. Exchange of barbs. Unsuccessful communication – information does not reach people; it's either the wrong information or the wrong people. Due to clashing ambitions, a lot of favorable time and opportunities in affairs are missed. Missed profit. Jealousy ('arrows of love' turn into 'arrows of jealousy'). Family quarrels. Domestic scandals. Confrontation.
Attempts to resolve an issue by force. Sudden cooling of feelings. Probably, common to all this is the fact that emotions become uncontrollable and get out of control (when infatuated, basically the same thing happens, only here – with a minus sign). Old interpretations also include the ruin of marriage plans due to a third party.
If the upright card accentuates synchronicity and coincidence, the reversed one speaks of some incompatibility, lack of coordination, a situation where something does not correspond to something, something does not coincide with something. This can be anything, from non-compliance with reporting standards to sexual incompatibility or biorhythm disruption. Hurdles in travel.
Danger of being dishonored, encountering falseness, lies, tinsel.
With The Magician – powerful activity, hatching grand plans.
The High Priestess (like the Four of Swords) – blocks the action of the Eight of Wands, tuning into stopping and waiting, delay, preparation.
Wheel of Fortune – enhances the meaning of the card, emphasizing rapid movement, swift development of events.
Death – enhances the meaning of the card, completion, end, outcome.
Judgment – a controversial interpretation, but according to Guggenheim, this combination of cards foretells an uncertain, problematic beginning.
With Ten of Wands – depression due to a large volume of work that must be completed in a short time.
With Eight of Cups – enhances the meaning of completion, the matter is nearing its end.
With Seven of Pentacles – imposition of a fine, tax, demand for prepayment.
Pegasus
Icarus
Archimedes and his 'Eureka!'
Newton under the apple tree.
The card has a special relation to ELECTRICITY.
