Four of Wands
A happy card. Its main meanings are benevolence and prosperity, noticeable and deserved success and recognition, excellent surroundings, 'the arrival of happiness.' It carries harmony, self-confidence, balance, and enjoyment of the fruits of one's labor. Under it go peace and rest, a situation where no troubles or difficulties threaten. Difficulties are behind; one can relax and enjoy life. Often it describes a situation when something has been done, useful experience has been gained, but one doesn't want to go further.

One just wants to enjoy what has been achieved. The card invites us to joy and merriment – life is beautiful! Sometimes it directly says that a deserved celebration awaits us, a fun party, some 'outing into society,' or simply a vacation. Under its jurisdiction are family holidays, banquets, alumni reunions, ceremonial assemblies, dacha parties, and picnics. But it happens that it simply carries tranquility and peace. This card exudes freedom, release from responsibility, completion of a matter. And even if it's about affairs – these are rather pleasant activities for the soul than righteous labors in the sweat of one's brow.
The Four of Wands is never an accidental or inconspicuous card in a spread. It is its adornment and will largely determine the general meaning of the divination. There is an opinion that in the upright position, it gives a favorable answer to almost any question. This card is the guardian of very positive and powerful energy. It is precisely the Four of Wands that appears in personal spreads for people about whom it is customary to say they are lucky. If this Arcana appears repeatedly during divination, complaints about life are not accepted!
It is a sign if not of extreme luck, then of fate's mercy, when it is sometimes relatively easy to bypass or overcome difficult situations. Sometimes it indicates unexpected luck, but more often its meaning leans towards the saying 'all's well that ends well.' It speaks of stable development of the matter and promises final success. Often it marks some rather fateful milestone in life (graduation, engagement, etc.).
Realization of plans, worthy completion of what was begun. Under this card often goes the 'legalization' of what is happening – this can be the legal registration of a business, receiving a diploma, marriage, concluding an important contract. It is believed that the Four of Wands describes the highest point of development of that into which much effort was invested. But it also opens possibilities for developing new beginnings.
One of the traditional meanings – successful arrival somewhere or return home, reunion with dear people.
Positive and optimistic.
The ideal of practical psychology – full development of possibilities and abilities, social demand, confidence, openness, ability to trust others and enjoy their trust. It removes any internal contradictions, gives – temporarily – the feeling of 'happiness that lasts forever.'
The Four of Wands carries a sense of security and inner serenity. These are happy times. Now the person feels free from any obligations and conditions that do not suit them and parts with the past without regret. Actually, Fours are introverted cards. The owner of the Four of Pentacles is closed off, the inhabitant of the Four of Cups is detached, and as for the sleeping beauty of the Four of Swords, there's no need to speak. But the Four of Wands is considered somewhat of an exception. Its tone is openness, hospitality, new meetings, going out, friendly gatherings and parties.
It corresponds to a period of peace and calm, during which we open up to life and its joys. We are confident in our own safety and therefore ready to leave the 'fortress walls' and go out into the external world. This means communication, entertainment, pleasures, new acquaintances, a feeling of deep connection with other people, social demand.
And yet the Four of Wands is not the Three of Cups. It encourages the establishment of boundaries so that the situation remains beautiful, gives a striving for stability and structure. It's just that it strongly emphasizes the desire to rest after righteous labors, enjoy a calm harmonious life, a situation of prosperity and comfort, and pleasures that can be bought with money. Mental stability and striving for order. Harmony, peace, calm, rest after a won war, enjoyment of the fruits of one's labor.
A person of the Four of Wands is satisfied with themselves and their place in life, knowing they deserved it. Sometimes they are an enthusiast of their cause or idea, a 'living advertisement,' others are drawn to them. They, like no one else, know how to inspire and encourage.
This is a period of transition to another level of development, to a more joyful and free level of life, when a person parts with their past without regret. These are all rites of passage where a person is welcomed into a new egregore, a new company. The energy of this card carries embodiment and simultaneously limitation of creative force. Some project materializes it but also sets the channel and framework. In the introduction of this card – well-balanced dynamics and energy, but this balance is created through some quite clear social structure.
The Four of Wands symbolizes mental stability, disciplined thought, striving for order, feeling of structure, finding like-minded people, feeling of belonging to a particular tradition. Here the theme of Aquarius sounds, but also some manifestations for Saturn (the second ruler of this sign). As Banzhaf and Akron write, energetically the card expresses the idea of cosmic order or the origin of the world: the initial creative impulse (the unit) acquired fruitful polarity in the two, expressed itself in the three (metaphor of conception), and solidified in the space of the four in the form of material embodiment. To realize 'in the beginning was...' means to turn to the past, to perform religare ('religion'), to return back.
One of the deep keys of the card – 'Love everything created by God.' The Four of Wands says that something is already so internally complete that it seems to cast itself into a certain form, like the appearance (unexpected materialization) of a miraculous icon. Another meaning – invention (an idea moves from the mental plane to the material). The card also symbolizes a situation where several people in different parts of the world simultaneously come to the same idea.
The third decan of Aries is traditionally associated with Venus, hence its second name – 'Love.' The impulse of energy penetrates matter and, in search of recognition, begins to interact with it. Personal enthusiasm collides with the objective laws of life. The objectivity of external existence orients a person towards finding their place in society and towards creative cognition of the paths of truth and justice: it makes one think about what a just social structure should be. This decan is more material than the previous two, and the impulse of love here can reach passion. At the same time, it is oriented towards socially useful labor as the most natural realization of internal strivings.
This is the card of established and ordered harmony, naturalness and joy, satisfaction and peace, and at the same time stable development – in family and at work. The possibility to resolve conflicts and reconcile contradictions that seemed unthinkable (hence, for example, the meaning of success in negotiations). There is also its own 'danger' – to allow stagnation, because useful experience has been gained and one wants to enjoy what has been achieved, is reluctant to go further (the trap of the card – resting on one's laurels, belief that peace has come forever). Its mystery – Alexander resting after conquering Babylon.
General meaning: the primary result has been achieved, there is something to congratulate oneself on. Valuable experience has been gained, which must be analyzed and preserved in order to go further. But there is a lack of drive for further projects, satisfied contemplation of what has been achieved (life has stabilized, well, amen). Here it is necessary to consider the completion of one stage as a release of energy for the next.
Light and shadow (advice and warning) The card's advice is to have a celebration, enjoy the luxury of human communication with friends, loved ones, show hospitality, or go out into society. Somewhere they are waiting very much! Sometimes the card indicates that it's time to deservedly rest – take a vacation. The advice of Josephine from the unforgettable 'Some Like It Hot' comes to mind – 'Turn on the charm full blast!' The card warns that too much time is devoted to entertainment, get-togethers, parties, and pleasant rest, and too little to work. This is the case when it's time for fun, and an hour for business. A desire to go with the flow, rather than solve problems and take responsibility, resting on one's laurels. Escapism, as well as 'various bad excesses.' Also, under this card, a person overestimates their abilities and their significance. The Four of Wands reminds us that a party-goer is not a profession, and incessant communication only creates an illusion of being in demand and prevents one from facing the truth.
Successful completion of a matter, a celebration on the occasion of the successful end of a project (or some stage of it), pride in one's achievements. Actually, this is NOT a work card – under it goes temporary release from responsibility, usually voluntary and desired. It is akin to the state after successfully passing an exam when no one is thinking about textbooks for a while. Of course, there will be other exams ahead, but now – sing and dance, drink and revel! There is joy and tranquility in the soul.
At the same time, this is a celebration for a reason – gratifying visible results have appeared. If talking about the organizational environment, this card rather corresponds to more or less pompous events and ceremonies, festive gatherings, than labor processes as such.
'A vacation like normal people' – carefree attitude, peace, calm. Prosperous retirement, retirement.
If it's still about work – career successes, achieving stability, successful realization of started projects. Recently acquired prosperity. Team spirit, effective and cheerful cooperation that people enjoy. Labor is perceived as art, routine tasks are done without strain, genuine benevolence and an atmosphere of mutual trust reign all around.
The pathos of the Four of Wands is harmony in human relationships in some formalized and ordered situation. Its essential feature is that no one holds a grudge or cherishes ulterior motives. If there are any professional problems, they are resolved successfully and by mutual agreement.
If it's about a project – it's a sensible idea, well-founded and creatively realized. Concluding contracts. Under the Four of Wands, one often manages to overcome or simply bypass practically insoluble situations, as well as achieve desired results in any area of interest without much difficulty. Sometimes the card describes a situation of patronage, protection, in which personal connections work strongly.
Successful negotiations, presentations, receptions. Warm welcome, high appreciation.
The card is considered to have a relation to design, decoration of homes and workplaces, magazines like 'House and Garden.'
Classic meaning – 'recently acquired prosperity,' the card of nouveaux riches (people who have recently and suddenly become wealthy and have not yet had time to properly settle into it, and they managed it through their own efforts, not in a 'hereditary' order). Material prosperity, stability, financial well-being. Positive resolution of issues related to business, investments, sponsorship, etc. Receiving a fee. Good profit. Deserved reward.
A material view of life arrives. Spending on oneself and one's desires, a general situation of prosperity and comfort. Pleasures that can be bought with money. Staying in excellent surroundings.
This is one of the best cards in spreads on housing questions. Its meaning is a good house, an excellent place to live. The numerical value is associated with reliability and strength; the four wands on the card correspond to the four corners of a house. Acquisition of real estate. Cultivating a plot of land.
It is believed that the Four of Wands largely reflects that energetic law according to which we attract people who complement us at the level we ourselves are at.
Happiness, stability, optimal development of a relationship. Sexual satisfaction, good compatibility. Prosperous joint life, harmony in the family. Warm sympathy and heartfelt warmth. Joint entertainment, going out, vacation, excellent pastime. Well-being at the hearth.
Under this card, readiness to meet halfway, demonstrate affection, show initiative, reveal feelings, give gifts, bring guests, and the like, is manifested. Those who were hiding in their own shell may quite well 'come out into the light' under this card, not fearing troubles, and make promising acquaintances. At the same time, this card is connected with returning to family roots (this meaning works to the greatest extent for those traveling and journeying), to the home harbor (the 4th house in astrology), where one can find peace, restore balance.
Romantic relationship, wedding celebration, marriage. A happy event. The Four of Wands is a very 'marriage' card. The four pillars with a floral garland on the Arcana in the Waite deck symbolically correspond to the marriage canopy and strong bonds. Fours order everything – thus the institution of marriage orders people's love relationships. This Arcana always shows that something is already so internally complete that it seems to cast itself into a certain form. For example, people sympathetic to each other intend to move in together for a joint life. Or a happy couple lived together and finally decided to formalize their relationship.
Interestingly, under this card sometimes pass 'happily divorced' people – those who perceived the dissolution of marriage as an escape from captivity and liberation from oppressive bonds and obligations.
In a dubious card environment, the Four of Wands may hint that the relationship exists more 'for show' than in reality and is a kind of 'PR effect.' This is true both for world stars and for those whose audience is mom, dad, and a handful of classmates.
Good health, recovery
In rare cases, the card indicates pregnancy and childbirth.
The reversed card can speak of unreasonable expenditure of energy, undermining health through too merry a lifestyle, as well as the inevitable processes of gradual aging, decline, loss of tone, menopause. One of its classic meanings is 'faded beauty.'
In old books of interpretations, it is indicated that the card, even in the reversed position, retains its positive meaning of happiness, satisfaction, prosperity, and beauty. And this, naturally, makes modern interpreters wary – it can't be that simple if the festive tent has overturned! It's as if a party on which great hopes were placed took place, but the querent was left out. One of the traditional meanings – 'unfulfilled romantic expectations,' also generally unrealized dreams.
One of the typical modern interpretations is 'not the time for a party.' There is still some obstacle, something that does not allow bringing the matter to an end and truly freeing oneself. Moreover, it is possible that the people with whom one would like to have a good time feel completely differently. This can also be the case when some banquet is coming up, the thought of which rather depresses than gladdens, and during which we only think about how to get away as soon as possible (the same, by the way, can apply to cultivating dacha plots).
In the reversed position, the card can indicate a temporary inability of the person to feel the joy of life, trust in friends and loved ones, and thereby, perhaps, advise postponing one's plans until peace of mind is restored. One of the traditional meanings – 'complete loss of calm.'
In the upright card, the motif of external respectability, festiveness, and orderliness is strong. The reversed one can destroy conventions and tear off masks (family holidays and generally meetings of people who haven't seen each other for some time often create favorable ground for this; all sorts of past sins, unexpected vices, and other 'terrible secrets' surface, as in Priestley's 'Dangerous Corner').
The event may not correspond to stereotypical ideas of how it should be (e.g., a non-traditional wedding). This card can be a warning that one cannot count on a happy turn of events; the situation is actually very shaky.
The upright card carries the energy of completion; the reversed one can indicate that the project needs refinement. In something that seemed already done and brought to an end, gaps and shortcomings are suddenly discovered, and putting a point fails (this can be a 'pleasant' discovery, for example, for a graduate who finds that the already bound thesis needs to be retyped due to technical errors and blunders that crept in).
There is an opinion that in the reversed position, the card means instability, haste, fuss. Sloppiness, inability to mobilize oneself for something. This can be an unwillingness to work, laziness, or a lack of belief in one's capabilities. Such a meaning as 'spoiled beauty' brings to mind an unsuccessful plastic surgery intended to 'improve the facade' but in fact making it worse than it was.
The reversed Four of Wands is also unfinished (broken off Aquarius-style) love relationships, incomplete happiness. With confirming cards – a decision to live separately, division of property, divorce. Also, this is not a situation where one can expect a quick marriage proposal.
This can be both the absence of outside help, care, protection, and ingratitude. A feeling of insecurity (the theme at the societal level sounds acute nowadays in the form of a complete lack of guarantees). It is believed that the card can indicate the necessity of selling real estate.
