Ten of Pentacles
The Ten of Pentacles denotes a period of wealth, stability, fullness of life, and confidence in the future.
The Ten of Pentacles denotes a period of wealth, stability, fullness of life, and confidence in the future.
At the same time, wealth and fullness can manifest both on the external and internal planes.
Its main meanings are prosperity, reliability and safety, the fulfillment of some earthly desire. The card unquestionably belongs to the group of positive Arcana and proclaims that what the person worked for has been achieved. Something has already been accomplished and completed, and the necessity has arisen to move to another step (this concerns both relationships and career). Golden times of confidence, reliability, and prosperity, a very stable life phase. This card promises great benevolence of life, attainment of all sought values. It foretells the success of the intended venture (although the path to success will be quite long), and a feeling of peace and happiness after its completion.
Like the Ten of Cups, this card is a significator of family, family matters, ancestors, ancestral nest. It says that everything is inherited – land, property, money, concepts. This is the card of hereditary aristocracy. Secular success. Concomitant luck in everything. This card is considered the culmination not only of the suit of Pentacles but of all the Minor Arcana.
A pronounced sense of self-worth.
A well-earned sense of confidence. Joy from what has been achieved (therefore in some interpretations the card means celebration). Calm and safety. Love of life, hedonism, perception of the world's wealth through all senses. Ability to see magic in the everyday, to live in accordance with the rhythms of nature.
If the person of the Nine of Pentacles feels a complete reluctance to participate in events of external life (beyond the most necessary), then the meaning of life for the person of the Ten of Pentacles is directly connected with the whirl of events around them, is open to the world and people. But, strangely enough, their horizons are still noticeably narrowed!
This card is a sign that whatever the person is engaged in at the moment (though it's likely some very earthly matters), they are completely immersed in the chosen task, have dived headfirst into this occupation and notices nothing else around. Therefore, they risk missing some things that could give them very much, perhaps even more than what they are so diligently chasing. The upright position of the Ten of Pentacles is connected with the sign of Cancer, and Cancer always dissolves in experience, in what it is doing.
Every suit reaching its culmination is a trial. The Ten of Swords tests with force, the Ten of Wands – with the burdens of success, the Ten of Cups – with love. Here – a trial by material well-being. Not every soul is given to pass it without degrading. The origins of any kind of wealth lie in human consciousness.
If this boundless inner treasure is brought out into the external world, it manifests and is reflected on the material plane and affects all levels of life (the Tree of Sephiroth). The overflowing characteristic of Mercury in Virgo says that wealth must be communicated, shared with others – what you hoard, you lose. Clinging arises from fear of lack, scarcity, expresses poverty of thinking. But the stunning reliability of the Ten of Pentacles can also seem boring – a person tends not to notice the riches they possess. The lesson of this Arcana – learn to gratefully and humbly enjoy everything given to you. Do not grumble, do not whine 'I want something else!' (like, spiritual... learn to see the spiritual in the material you have).
The down-to-earth Ten of Pentacles, like the Ace of Pentacles, is a very esoterically strong card. It depicts the Tree of Sephiroth – this is the entire earthly history of world civilization, each life process separately and each of us: the presence of each person in the world directly transforms life. The card depicts different stages of existence: an elder looking through an arch at the development of the city of the future, a man, a woman and a child, as well as dogs devoted to humans, all together symbolizing the further evolution not only of the human but also the animal kingdom.
In divination, this picture is interpreted as daily accomplishment. The world is not endowed with any special meaning other than what we endow it with. The Tree of Life in the picture merely indicates that we are at a certain evolutionary stage – and ahead is a new stage of existence, foreseen by the wise. To achieve inner fullness, one must always keep one's eyes open. Thus, the card warns that amid business troubles and diligence, one must not forget matters of the soul. Amid everyday life, seemingly so gray, one must be able to see the wonders it holds.
In the everyday world of home and work affairs, there is more magic than in any spells and rituals. The gift of the Ten of Pentacles is respect for all forms and manifestations of life, understanding that great cosmic events occur at all levels, and the ability to see them around oneself, noticing the unusual in the most mundane.
Light and Shadow (Advice and Warning) Advice: if you want to be happy – be happy! Learn to see wealth and fullness in your life – like attracts like. The card's advice is to live with confidence in tomorrow, to strive for stability and constancy. Warning: excessive attachment to what exists 'today' due to its fullness and wealth; unwillingness to pay attention to anything else, stagnation. The trap of traditions, family life. Obsession with wealth, being blinded by money. Tendency to place too much importance on things and to be deceived by external well-being and stability – life is changeable, after all. However, sometimes the card is interpreted as a warning to protect one's rear, cherish what one has, care for life's stability, and pay maximum attention to one's family.
Skill and diligence, resourcefulness, knack, experience.
Success of the intended venture.
A thriving business.
Sensible investments, large-scale projects.
An excellent business opportunity.
A sign that the person has occupied a firm position in their field. Promotion. Stable state of affairs. The Ten of Pentacles can indicate material dependence, when well-being completely subjugates a person (and they don't leave a hated job because of good pay). Usually the Ten of Pentacles gives good reward, excellent working conditions, and all sorts of guarantees.
Associated with the Ten of Pentacles are love for nature and care for the natural environment, so the profession may be related to ecology, naturopathy, eco-friendly products, etc.
Improvement of financial position. Receiving money from a profitable organization. Property acquired after long years of labor and resource accumulation. The peak of prosperity and tranquility as a result of wealth within the family circle. Abundance, sufficiency, excellent provision. Upheavals and cataclysms are not anticipated, and the nest egg saved 'for a rainy day' will most likely remain untouched. The card points to such income sources as inheritance, family money, or a decent pension. Excellent housing situation. Sometimes – living under one roof with older relatives, an entire clan in one house.
This is a card of happiness, stability, and completeness; it presupposes the presence of family and close emotional ties. Advantageous marriage. Acceptance into a family possessing wide financial capabilities and high social status.
The Ten of Pentacles involves 'exemplary' behavior and life by the rules: good relations between parents and children, a firm position in the family, a strong marriage, generally the ability to set an example. The theme of social standard is strong in it – can your behavior be a rule and a virtuous model (which can be very important for politicians, for example).
All free, conditional, non-traditional, and dubious things do not relate to it. Here patriarchy, traditionality, and stability are strong, the factor of a 'reliable rear.' This is a card of unity, community, connectedness of people. Moreover, this is precisely the case where belonging to a family brings both financial well-being and emotional satisfaction. 'My home is my castle.'
Respect for traditions and their continuation, knowledge of one's roots and ancestors, attachment to the lineage, family orientation (themes of the 4th House). Family holidays, joint pastimes. Return to the family. The Ten of Pentacles governs all sorts of formal engagements and deeds of gift, inheritance of wealth, and matters of ancient lineage. As they say, 'questions of blood are the most complex questions in the world.'
Maximum enrichment of relationships, enjoyment of the full spectrum of love, strength and durability of feelings. Naturalness of sexual expression. The card gives, if not an abundance of material values in the home, passed from generation to generation (which may well be), then at least a well-appointed daily life.
Flourishing. In reversed form, may indicate hereditary, family illnesses.
In a reversed position, the Ten of Pentacles - unjustified risk, poor chances, unsuccessful investments, hence possible losses, damage, and even loss of everything achieved in life (this can also manifest as a problem with pension). One traditional meaning – squandered fortune, loss of inheritance (mainly due to gambling and dissolute lifestyle). This is a clear warning to refrain from major purchases and risky financial operations.
The card has a special relation to the theme of family and home. Lack of family support, family discord. Disrespect for traditions, negative attitude towards one's origins, break with the lineage (old interpretations note such themes as dishonor, disgrace). Lack of community with other family members. Unwillingness to continue family traditions or the lineage at all, to marry, to have children. Absence of a home, being forced to leave the ancestral nest. Poor housing conditions. Good relations between parents and children are possible but not realized yet, something hinders them.
Other meanings - unreliability, lack of safety, reliance on luck, foul play. In a metaphysical sense - changes seem to continue, nothing solid, established exists, reliability is absent. In the reversed Ten of Pentacles, the opposite of Cancer, Capricorn, plays out; here it's important to gain patience (Saturn) and not despair, hoping for the future. From another point of view, the reversed Ten of Pentacles is also success, but the path to it may be so long that the querent themselves won't see it. Whether to undertake the matter in such a situation is for them to decide.
The other extreme: the person is fed up with everything material, they have everything, but their soul is not drawn to anything. They yearn for something more sublime but cannot overcome their earthiness. And at the same time, they do not realize the value of what they possess, and in striving for change and adventure, they are ready to risk financial and family stability.
Just as the reversed Ten of Cups can indicate general unhealthiness of the environment surrounding a person, the Ten of Pentacles can indicate a similar problem, but with greater emphasis on deliberate destruction of the natural environment, insensitivity to the beauty of the surrounding world, inner disrespect for it (which can express itself, for example, in hobbies showing disregard for life in general).
