The Three of Cups adorns a spread; this is a card of wish fulfillment in business or personal life, it denotes the most joyful development of a situation. It heralds the beginning of a pleasant and carefree period of life, a bright streak. This is – success of the intended venture, restoration of good relations.
It shows that something important and beautiful has entered our life, or that we have received a gift (from a person or from fate itself) that has filled us with joy, happiness, and gratitude. On a deeper level, the card can mean optimism and a feeling of fullness of being; on the external (event-related) plane – celebration, feast. Its most traditional meaning: celebration, drinking party, friendly revelry, carefree and joyous enjoyment of what is happening. Rapture of the happiness of being, a worldly celebration of the soul.
It heralds a time of joys and passions, when a person is possessed by inspiration, and their heart beats happily. Time well spent, pleasure derived from love and the company of a loved one, enjoyment of unity. This is a very precise and strong card! It always carries simple joys that help restore vitality, fullness of being, to feel carefreeness and happiness.
If the question was about a problem, a crisis, the Three of Cups symbolizes the ability to find a good way out of a difficult situation and the relief brought by fate – a happy solution, possibly coming to a friendly compromise, receiving support from third parties.
Cheers!
Intense cheerfulness, optimistic perception of reality, excellent mood, the person floats like a feather. They are literally not weighed down or pressed by anything. Happiness as a state of soul, a name day of the heart. Joy of life, satisfaction, gratitude to fate. The Three of Cups is especially well felt after preceding hardships, anxieties, and strains. It brings healing and peace to the soul.
A period of great creative inspiration, inner growth, and fullness.
Pleasant, carefree, love-related pastime, harmonious emotional state, not burdened by thoughts of consequences. Merry and self-forgetful being 'in one's own kingdom,' 'catching a buzz.'
Sociability.
The Arcana symbolically depicts the cosmic dance of Shiva, evoking from non-existence numerous diverse worlds. This passionate action deprives the dyad of its stable but immobile equilibrium. The created Universe becomes a source of abundance, where the needs of all beings are satisfied according to their nature. At a deep level, the Three of Cups speaks of faithfulness to one's nature, that whoever has preserved their heart from false, induced, suggested desires and remained themselves will receive what they truly need for happiness (and will be able to share it with others in accordance with the principle of energy circulation).
Three signifies that the initial emotional impulse takes on some satisfactory forms. In doing so, one emotion can be replaced by another, more acceptable one. Such games usually occur at the subconscious level. The second decan of Cancer, ruled by Mercury, carries the idea of understanding life-creation processes and the conscious inclusion of feelings in these processes: switching from the inner world to the external and, conversely, from external impressions to the richness of one's soul. It symbolizes abundance and prosperity.
In the situation described by this card, it is recommended to maintain the status quo so that the soul's celebration, which life grants us, does not turn into a wild bacchanalia. The Three is dynamic, nothing binds emotions; they feed one another, forming an astral vortex. Feeling must follow thought, which helps establish a correspondence between deeply hidden processes (changeable and elusive sensations) and the external world, to which they seem alien.
Emotional instability, rapid change of feelings and thoughts psychologically reflect inner dissatisfaction. But it forces one to turn to memory (Cancer) to find life guidelines and understanding of the present in repetitions of the past. Three is a number connected with the ideal, with the striving to embody the desired. It means strong emotions and also develops intuition (which is generally characteristic of Cups).
Light and Shadow (Advice and Warning)
Advice: give thanks to fate, learn to accept what loved ones offer and share with them what you have. Arrange a merry celebration (it can look very different depending on temperament and lifestyle). Warning – don't count your chickens before they hatch. The card also hints that excessive indulgence in feelings is out of place. In general, it's not the time to seek sensual pleasures and entertainment, to run to parties and dates. 'Songs, dances – all later.'
Receiving a satisfactory result, successful completion of a project. The venture will be successful to the full satisfaction of all interested parties. Accomplishments. Positive resolution of work-related issues.
The traditional meaning of the Three of Cups is a small success, victory in an undertaking not requiring special effort. But this can be disputed. This is a 'small' success only compared to the triumphs of the Nine and Ten, and subjectively it can be experienced as a real celebration! A student who successfully escaped an exam they had no hope of passing feels the strength and vitality of the Three of Cups to a much greater degree than one might feel at some pompous banquet for a major occasion.
Traditionally, the Three of Cups also promises a promotion. Successful continuation of cooperation, partnership relations. Exchange of experience in a team, an excellent team.
The Three of Cups also says that the person really likes their work. It's nice that they are also paid for it, but if they weren't burdened with care for their daily bread, they would do it for free. This phrase can be heard from professional dancers, be it ballet or striptease, and it suggests that it's not for nothing that a dance is depicted on the Three of Cups. It has a special relation to creative, dynamic, emotional occupations, in the course of which a specific rapture arises. Surely something similar could be said by professional footballers, singers, actors.
Profit from a joint venture, joint investments. Abundance and sufficiency, good earnings. Fulfillment of wishes. On some problems, it will be possible to come to an agreement, reach a compromise, and resolve everything quite painlessly.
It is believed that the card has a special relation to female friendship. Perhaps that is so, but its meaning is clearly not limited to this.
There is also an opinion that, unlike the Two of Cups, the Three of Cups points to the success and establishment of relations among many, or at least several, people constituting a family, group, collective, etc. But in practice, it works perfectly in a pair as well. One of its most traditional meanings – wedding bells. Engagement, marriage, birth of a child. In practice, it often means a small celebration of love – a romantic weekend or at least a great date.
The Three of Cups is an exceptionally positive card; no wonder it was called 'the celebration of love.' In its domain are live and strong feelings, reciprocity, enchantment with each other, bliss, even overflowing. The ability to wholly surrender to harmonious relationships (it's like dancing or singing together). Some authors believe this card can signify a close karmic connection between two people. But in any case – old problems and complexes are neutralized.
There is a readiness to share love and pleasure with the partner, complete openness to life. A qualitative change in the 'climate' of the relationship with the loved one has occurred, a subtle transition to a new level. Emotional unity, open expression of feelings, overflowing exchange of love, rare and valuable sensations and perceptions that can be intimately transmitted. Shared experience of the best human feelings, the opportunity to share acquired soul and body harmony.
Fulfillment of desires in personal life, a state of being in love in previously begun romantic relations, when complete trust creates a truly sacred space of merging. The Three of Cups symbolizes vital treasures inherent in an unusual love of a higher order. Exchange of precious and exquisite feelings with a large degree of trust and selectivity. Such relationships are a rare gift; they must be cared for with respect and gratitude.
Inner forces have reached such a level that they physically express themselves with delight. Joy, passion, and fullness of life, lively feelings, deep gratitude, highest mutual trust. Abundance of sensual pleasures, openness in them, ecstatic merging with the partner. Conception as an expression of the happiness of loving and being loved.
Interestingly, the Three of Cups acquires a less favorable meaning when it comes to the relationships of not quite mature people, adolescent (no longer childish in terms of self-disclosure) friendship. Here it turns out to be partly the opposite of the Two: if that symbolized idyll, deep unity, the Three introduces the 'interfering' energies of friendship with 'others' as well. The Three of Cups expands the circle of connections and interests, and at the same time, isolation occurs, loss of that intimacy possible in a dyad.
Recovery and well-being.
The reversed Three of Cups is unfavorable for relationships – it points to loss of happiness, deceived hopes, fading of feelings, or a love triangle. The connection is going through difficult times. Some authors believe that in a reversed position, the card retains its favorable meaning, indicating only that at the moment something hinders success and good relations, but this will pass with time.
Sensuality, excesses, overabundance, excessive love for sensual pleasures. Tendency to exaggerations, waste of one's vital forces.
Ending, conclusion of something. Very modest results, achievement of small goals or even failure of the venture. Lack of prestige. Misunderstanding of the situation.
